John: An Expositional Commentary offers a verse-by-verse overview of the Gospel of John, exploring its theological richness and pastoral significance for Christian readers.
Dr. R.C. Sproul brings together careful biblical exposition and pastoral warmth in this commentary, adapted from sermons he preached at Saint Andrew’s Chapel in Sanford, Fla. Following the ancient practice of lectio continua—continuous exposition through a book of the Bible—Sproul works through John’s Gospel passage by passage, attending to its key themes rather than offering exhaustive treatment of every verse. He describes the book as an overview and introduction intended to highlight the “big picture” of each passage.
John’s Gospel, as Sproul notes, is the most theological of the four Gospels, devoting nearly two-thirds of its account to the final week of Jesus’ life and placing sustained attention on His redemptive work. The commentary traces major movements in the narrative: the prologue’s declaration of the Word made flesh, Jesus’ signs and “I am” sayings, the bread of life discourse, mounting conflict with the Jewish leaders, the upper room discourse and High Priestly Prayer, the trial and crucifixion, and the resurrection appearances. Throughout, Sproul draws out the Gospel’s witness to the deity and humanity of Christ, the relationship between the Father and the Son, and the nature of faith and unbelief.
Sproul addresses both mind and heart, applying the text to questions of doctrine, worship, and Christian living. The result is a commentary shaped by decades of teaching and pastoral ministry.
